Down to the stream to fetch the days water, it’s part of his morning routine. He’s discovered that there is a lot of give and take living on the mountain. It offers freedom but still requires structure. Life here is simple, but it’s not easy. Living in nature’s beauty is a blessing, though he is also at it’s mercy. And while nothing compares to the peace and serenity, the solitude can be quite lonely.

The idea of living somewhere remote, a cabin in the woods perhaps, has always appealed to me. I think it has to do with my love/hate attitude toward people and society. I guess that's the genesis of the painting. I remember when I was a kid reading and loving this book about a boy who goes off on his own and lives in a tree in the woods. That book is "My Side of The Mountain" by Jean George. I see this painting showing the character Sam all grown up. At the end, Sam decides his life is about balancing his desire to live off the land with his desire to be with the people he loves. A sentiment I can relate to.
