The theme, the joy of rain, came in part from the Cirque Eloize stage show I recently saw, which celebrates childhood memories of playing in the rain. Remembering some slides my dad took of our local downtown on a rainy night when I was a kid, I recalled how stunning all the lights and reflections were in those pictures.
When I started, I feared that the intricacies of the background might be overwhelming. What got me through it without too much trauma was finding a balance of fine detail and loose impressionism. On top of the complex setting, I also needed to render a very wet figure (granted I have done this a few times before), showing him in a totally soaked and revealing shirt, not hating or cower from the rain, but reveling in it.
