The idea of living somewhere remote, a cabin in the woods perhaps, has always appealed to me. I think it has to do with my love/hate attitude toward people and society. I guess that's the genesis of the painting. I remember when I was a kid reading and loving this book about a boy who goes off on his own and lives in a tree in the woods. That book is "My Side of The Mountain" by Jean George. I see this painting showing the character Sam all grown up. At the end, Sam decides his life is about balancing his desire to live off the land with his desire to be with the people he loves. A sentiment I can relate to.
