“He attended to his champions every need, making sure he was prepared to give a thrilling performance. Not only did the weaponry have to be right, the look needed to be right to gain the favor of the crowd. Afterall the crowd was not here to see a fight they were here for the spectaculum.”
Working on this painting was very nostalgic of my early years, when I did a lot of fantasy works. I modeled them after fantasy book covers by artist like Boris, Frazetta, Bell etc. It allowed me to paint muscular scantily clad men (with an occasional damsel thrown in) and keep my sexual identity a bit ambigous.
